Have a way to include reciepts for an item, say a car, that show the "cost of ownership" over time; such as repairs, addons, etc.

There's two ways to show accrued cost, another item (like a replacement motor for a car window) and a service cost (like hiring a repairman). The first one could be done by referencing the "item" table, but how could we do the second one?
